Next Tuesday is the first-ever World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. A day of prayer for creation is not new in other Christian churches. As a sign of our communion with them, Pope Francis has instituted this new day of prayer for the global Catholic Church to be celebrated annually on September 1st, the same date as the Orthodox Church. For the first time, Christians around the world will be united in prayer and action on behalf of the earth and it’s needs. In his letter proclaiming this new day of prayer Pope Francis expressed his desire that ” . . . this annual celebration becomes a powerful moment of prayer, reflection, conversion and the adoption of appropriate life styles.”
A number of groups have prepared creative and thoughtful resources to be used individually or with a group. The Global Catholic Climate Movement invites us to expand the Day of Prayer into a Season of Creation from September 1 to October 4, the Feast of St. Francis. The web site, in English, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian, contains suggestions and links to additional resources.
We’d love to hear how you, our readers, are preparing to mark the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. Won’t you take a few moments to share your ideas, plans, and actions in the comment box?
