Vocation isn’t simply figuring out what I want or choose. It has to include listening to God. From Abraham to Moses, from Jesus to each of us today, “vocation is always a work of God,” says Pope Francis. It is God who helps us “leave ourselves and our false security behind, and strike out on the path which leads to Jesus Christ.”
How does God do this? God’s work of vocation in us occurs in ways both subtle and very clear. We come to know God’s call through the pristine beauty of nature, the fidelity of a friend, the depth of an insight, the silence of prayer, the smiles of the poor, the intimacy of Eucharist. Be attentive . . . . and listen.
Sunday, April 26, is World Day of Prayer for Vocations. Pray to recognize the work of God in your life. Pray that new responders will hear the call to be disciples of Jesus, with hearts open to his unlimited love.
