St Joseph, whose feast is today, is often portrayed as an old man, but I like to think of him as young, strong, and very much in love with Mary. His life was turned upside down when he learned of Mary’s pregnancy, but he had the courage to trust and stay with her.
He was also a dreamer—literally! His dreams gave him the insight to recognize God’s voice in confusing and challenging times. Mark Thibodeaux, S.J., writes of the usefulness of “praydreaming” in discernment–to let God dream in me. Perhaps that’s what Joseph did. Maybe we could also benefit from this.
