During Lent we hear a lot about the desert. Jesus . . . “was led by the Spirit into the desert for forty days, to be tempted by the devil.” [Mark 4:2] Christians refer to the season of Lent as a time to follow Jesus into the desert, to engage mindfully in practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, and to review our way of life as disciples.
I live in the Midwest, far from any desert. I need to be creative and find my own spot—a place to visit regularly for solitude, challenge, and spiritual growth. It could be a park bench, a quiet chapel, or a hidden corner in a shopping mall. The important thing is to be open to being led by the Spirit. Could the Spirit be calling you into the desert this Lent, too? Before you decide, be sure to watch the short video Go Into the Desert. And for nourishment on your Lenten desert experience, I recommend praying with Pope Francis’ Lenten Message.
Where is the Spirit leading you this Lent?
