Does this ever happen to you? Your brain fast-forwards into Future Mode. All the To Do’s and What Ifs of the unknown future compete for your attention. The next thing you know your body is tense, the world around you is invisible, and your mind is orchestrating events that you have no control over. Sound familiar? It happens to me all of the time.

Silhouette of the beautiful statue of Christ the Redeemer at sunset in Rio de Janeiro, BrazilI thought of this recently as I spoke with a young woman who’s beginning to discern a vocation to religious life. She shared that she’d actually wondered about being a Sister on and off since high school, but tried to put it out of her mind. She was afraid that God would ask her to do something she didn’t want to do or wasn’t able to do. Have you seen the Disney movie Frozen? That’s what opened this discerners heart. After seeing Frozen, she realized that she didn’t want her relationship with God to be based on fear, but love.

Our foundress, St. Angela Merici, was a woman in love with God and a skilled discerner. She reminds us: “God wants nothing for you but only your good and your joy.” So if you find yourself trying to hide from God’s invitation, release your head from Future Mode and allow yourself to enjoy all the good and the joy that God has placed around you and within you. When we live in Present Mode, we will hear God’s voice loud and clear.
