We bless you, Lord God most high, who lowered yourself for our sake. You are immense, and you made yourself small; you are rich and you made yourself poor; you are all-powerful and you made yourself vulnerable.
These words from the Christmas homily of Pope Francis touch on the vulnerability of being human. On this last day of 2013, our world and our people are tired, fragile, suffering, and seeking clarity in so much darkness and confusion. We are influenced (and sometimes controlled) by the circumstances of our lives, by the cultures and times in which we live. Yet, into this very vulnerability, our God comes and becomes like us. In Jesus, we are transformed, we learn to live by his grace, and we become his presence to others.
The Glory of the Lord shone all around at the first Christmas, and it shines around us when we open our lives to the power of God. May this New Year of 2014 be one of grace and glory for all!
