The NBC headline read “Frozen Nation” and reported a “deep freeze” gripping almost the whole country last Friday. The cold and ice surely did cause real problems for some. Where I live, the snow was just enough to be beautiful but not destructive, and it added to a spirit of Advent silence, reflection, and listening.
Snow covers the ground and clings to the starkness of winter tree branches. It blows and drifts and melts into the earth. Just so, may Advent Peace sink into our hearts, encircle the longing we feel for greater meaning, absorb our daily preoccupations and focus us more and more on Jesus, the God who comes to us. With that Peace filling our lives, it won’t matter if we have a White Christmas or not. We’ll already have what matters.
